What Puts the "A" in A19?

An A-shaped bulb looks nothing like an A

 

When you picture a light bulb, you picture an A-shape: that classic teardrop that has been globally recognized since the late 1800s. The standard A19 is the one Thomas Edison made famous. (Made famous, not invented. Edison did not invent the incandescent bulb. He and his team made it practical enough to manufacture and sell.)

So what does the "A" actually mean? Not the letter's shape. In lighting, the A is widely said to stand for "arbitrary," the idea being that the classic bulb form was a design choice, not a technical requirement. Whatever you call it, that silhouette became the shape the whole world agreed on.

 

The numbers are the useful part

 

The number after the "A" is the bulb's widest diameter, measured in eighths of an inch. Divide by 8:

  • A19 = 19/8 inch = 2.375 inches wide, the everyday household bulb
  • A21 = 21/8 inch = 2.625 inches wide, a bit bigger, and usually a bit longer too
  • A15 and A23 exist for smaller and larger fixtures

One practical note: because an A21 is often longer than an A19, it will not always fit a fixture built for an A19. Not every A-shape is interchangeable, so check the space before you swap.

Why the shape never changed

 

Here is the interesting part. An LED works nothing like an incandescent. It needs no filament and no glass envelope, so when LED arrived, bulbs could have been reinvented into almost any form. Mostly, they were not. Manufacturers kept the familiar A-shape on purpose, so a new technology would drop into the billions of existing fixtures, and so it would feel familiar to buyers. The guts changed completely, from incandescent to halogen to CFL to LED. The silhouette barely moved.

 

From arbitrary to engineered

 

That is the fun of it: the most recognizable object in your house got its shape almost by accident, and then kept it for a century.

Ours is a little different. We kept the true A19 shape people know, but we engineered our American-made A19 with a slightly longer body, which gives it more surface area to shed heat. Heat is what kills an LED, so that longer body is not a style choice. It is engineering. The shape may have started out arbitrary. The bulb inside it is anything but.
