Bulbs that are PAR for the Course

PAR-shape CFL bulbs look and function like a traditional incandescent or halogen PAR lamp but utilize compact fluorescent technology to produce light in a much more efficient manner. An electric current is driven through a tube containing a coating of fluorescent gas and metal vapors, which produces UV light. The only difference between a PAR-shaped CFL and a Spiral or Twist CFL is the housing of the bulb, itself.

PAR is an acronym for Parabolic Reflector, and these bulbs utilize a parabolic mirror in order to concentrate their light output into a focused beam. There are a variety of PAR-shaped bulbs, which include the PAR16, PAR20, PAR30, and PAR38 shapes, with the numerical value of each size indicating the bulb’s diameter in 1/8” increments.

PAR bulbs are best used in applications requiring precise lighting angles, ranging from very narrow flood and spotlights to wide flood beams. They are an ideal option for directional lighting in any residential or commercial space, and are often found being used in settings from recessed lighting in your living room to stage lighting in a theatre, or even in motion pictures where a large amount of flat lighting is needed to make a scene really stand out. The creative range of uses for PAR-shaped bulbs is endless, and we are always excited to hear what our customers have done with their own lighting designs while using them.

What are some of the fun ways you use your PAR bulbs? Let us know, we'd love to hear about it! If you're stuck on what bulbs to use, please reach out to one of our certified lighting specialists by phone, email, or chat with any questions on creating your own, unique lighting designs today!
